Happy Birthday Magna Carta: Eight Hundred Years Ago Today

A refresher course on the Magna Carta: On June 15, 1215, King John of England was forced by the English barons to put into effect a document that guarantees liberties to the individual over the state. This was the declaration that made the defense of freedom everyone’s business. It is a law more powerful than the biggest man in the tribe, or the strongest king, or even a government. It emphasizes the freedom of church, the freedom of cities, and, most importantly, due process of the law. The power of the people was an ideal that melded the allies in 1941, and now we have a duty as guardians of this system to pass the inheritance on to our children.

I hope you listen to Daniel Hannan’s 2013 stirring presentation at the monument. BTW, I think I learned this as “Magna Charta” maybe in a time capsule? I really feel old now.

Thanks to Ron Wilson who brought this to my attention. I am glad I taught him to read!
